Residential (In-Patient) Program

Residential Program

At the Canadian Health Recovery Centre we believe that treating the whole person is integral to their recovery success. We offer a comprehensive treatment approach to alcohol and drug addiction recovery, as well as concurrent mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and emotional trauma. Our program is designed to provide our clients with access to various streams of treatment including individual, group and family counselling.

Treatment is informed by principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) – including a focus on mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance. Our program follows best practices, is evidence-based and proven to be effective in the treatment of addictive behaviours.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy is a structured type of psychotherapy done individually or in groups. Clients and therapist work collaboratively to help clients gain control of their problematic behaviours and alleviate their distress so they feel more hopeful and are better equipped to address future situations.

In CBT, clients learn techniques to identify and modify their negative thoughts and cognitive distortions. Clients are provided with various self-monitoring tools and complete homework between sessions to enhance and practise the skills learned. Through CBT, clients learn to change how they think (cognition) and what they do (behaviour), and this has an impact on how they feel.

We focus on how clients view themselves, the world, and their future. They learn that the emotional consequences of events are mostly created by their own belief system and that the emotional disturbances are caused by their own unfounded, irrational beliefs. When clients can identify such beliefs, they can learn to dispute them by challenging them rationally. The clinician will then assist clients with discovering and practising healthy and adaptive alternatives.

CBT is client-centred in that the clinicians provide clients with the tools they need to make effective change in their lives. The treatment can be adapted to clients’ unique problems.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavioural therapy is a psychotherapy method that combines elements of cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, client-centred, gestalt, paradoxical and strategic approaches with Eastern philosophy and mindfulness meditation practices. According to DBT theory, there is an interaction between clients’ emotional vulnerability and their invalidating environment.

The main components of DBT are a weekly skills training group, weekly individual therapy and between-session coaching. In DBT, clients learn to identify the emotions, thoughts, sensations, behaviours and urges linked to their problematic behaviours, all antecedents and precipitating factors. They learn adaptive solutions to their behavioural problems. Some of the underlying assumptions of DBT include that all things are connected and change is constant and inevitable.

With DBT, clients gain knowledge of how to identify what they can change and accept what cannot be changed, how to regulate their emotions, how to de-stress, and how to communicate effectively.

Neuroplasticity

At the Canadian Health Recovery Centre, we are striving to encourage and assist those struggling with addiction to achieve life-long lasting recovery. An important component of this process is teaching about the functions of the brain and the connections between the brain and addiction. The different areas of this vital organ play a dominant role in our thoughts, behaviours and emotions. We walk around with this brain of ours every single day, all day long. Our brain tracks our every move, literally, through the formation of neural pathways or neural connections. When we repeat behaviour over and over again, we establish a pattern – a pattern that is recorded in the brain.

Addiction involves a variety of neural pathways that influence and dictate our thoughts, behaviours and emotions. Once these pathways are established, it takes little to no effort to recall them and engage them. Often times, our patterns of thought, behaviour and emotion become automatic. Neural pathways cannot be eliminated from the brain through the process of neuroplasticity; however, new neural pathways can be formed and existing pathways can be reorganized. This process is referred to as neuroplasticity. The more we repeat a particular pattern, the better we become at it, to the point where we can engage in a behaviour without having to think much about it. Thoughts, behaviours and emotions can be changed and overcome with practice and technique.

At CHRC we will teach the individual struggling with addiction about how these patterns may have been established by identifying habits, or pathways, throughout their life. Individuals will have an opportunity to observe the pathways, interrupt the pathways, use their imagination to retrain the pathways, and engage in new healthy behaviours to form new pathways.
