Treatment for Porn/Sex Addiction in Ontario, Canada

Recovery is possible

Porn or sex addiction can cause serious problems in your life. It can damage your most important relationships, cause problems at work, home, or school, and lead to financial or legal troubles.

What Is Porn Addiction?

Porn addiction is when a person becomes emotionally dependent on pornography to the point that it interferes with their daily life and relationships.

Viewing pornography triggers the release of pleasure-producing chemicals in the brain, including dopamine, adrenaline, and oxytocin. For some people, this can become addictive. They may begin to use porn compulsively not only for the pleasure response, but also to cope with stress or mental health issues like anxiety, depression, or PTSD.

Unfortunately, this compulsive behaviour can harm important relationships and make it difficult to form new romantic connections. This can leave a person feeling ashamed, lonely, and depressed.

Symptoms of Porn Addiction

If you are concerned about your porn viewing, here are some warning signs to watch out for:

  • You are consumed with thoughts of porn even when you are not watching it
  • You continue watching porn even though it has hurt your relationships or caused problems at work or home
  • You view porn at inappropriate times (e.g., while at work or in social situations)
  • You feel ashamed, guilty, or depressed about your porn use
  • You hide your porn viewing from your partner, family members, or friends
  • You experience sexual dysfunction or reduced sexual satisfaction with real-world partners
  • You get upset or angry when asked to cut back or stop watching porn
  • You have tried unsuccessfully to quit watching porn
  • Your online porn use has escalated into real-world casual or anonymous sexual encounters
  • You have experienced legal or financial problems related to your porn use

What Is Sex Addiction?

Enjoying sex is perfectly normal, and having a strong interest in sex not does not mean a person has a sex addiction. But when a person feels a compulsive need to perform sexual acts to achieve the kind of “fix” someone might get from using drugs or alcohol, this is a sign of a problem.

The person may seek out multiple sex partners or arrange their life in a way that allows them to engage in sex acts multiple times a day. They may have a hard time controlling their behaviour, even when it causes problems in their life.

Sex addiction can hurt a person’s most important relationships and even put them in physical danger if they engage in risky behaviour, such as having sex with strangers.

Symptoms of Sex Addiction

If you are concerned about your sexual behaviour, here are some warning signs to watch out for:

  • You are preoccupied with sex or have obsessive sexual thoughts or fantasies that interfere with daily life
  • You compulsively engage in sexual activity with multiple partners or strangers
  • You hide or lie about your sexual activity
  • You put yourself or others in danger to engage in sexual activity
  • You experience problems in your relationships because of sexual activity
  • You feel guilt, remorse, or self-loathing after sex
  • You feel unable to control your compulsive behaviour
  • You have experienced legal or financial problems related to your sexual behaviour

The Link Between Substances and Porn/Sex Addiction

Just as some people use drugs or alcohol to cope with anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem, or trauma, a person may use porn or sex compulsively for the same reasons.

It’s also common to combine porn or sexual activity with drugs or alcohol. Some people use substances to amplify sexual feelings, others to cope with feelings of shame, guilt, or embarrassment about their porn use or sexual behaviour.

But combining substances with pornography/sex increases the risk of addiction to both. It also increases the likelihood a person will experience relationship problems, issues at work or school, or financial problems. And it increases a person’s risk for anxiety and depression.

Porn/Sex and Substance Abuse Addiction Programs in Ontario, Canada

Porn/Sex Addiction Treatment at CHRC

If compulsive porn use or sexual activity is negatively impacting your life, CHRC can help.

We offer porn and sex addiction recovery programs exclusively for men. Why men only? Research shows that men tend to have better outcomes in gender-specific treatment, especially when it comes to porn or sex addiction. Men often hold intense feelings of guilt or shame around these behaviours, and they may be more hesitant to share in a co-ed setting.

During individual therapy sessions our sex addiction therapist helps clients get to the root of why they compulsively use porn or sex. Our program is designed to help clients build self-esteem and learn healthier ways of managing stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts patterns through evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural therapy.

Whole-body healing through good nutrition and exercise is a core part of our program. A healthy whole-food diet helps to address the biochemical imbalances that often contribute to addiction and relapse. CHRC is the only addiction treatment provider in Toronto or Ontario to offer orthomolecular therapy that uses supplementation to address chronic conditions that impact mental health and the cycle of addiction.
