Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Addiction
A person may express guilt or shame as it relates to the traumatic incident. Traumatic events can be single, recurring, or multiple events that occur in a person’s life. Here are some examples:
- Car crash
- Violent assault
- House fire
- Sexual assault
- Death of a child
- Living through war/natural disaster
- Attending combat
- Childhood neglect
- Sexual or physical abuse
If a person has experienced trauma in their lives, they may develop either simple or complex PTSD. Experiencing a single traumatic event is most likely to lead to simple PTSD. Complex PTSD tends to result from long-term, chronic trauma and can affect a person’s ability to form healthy, trusting relationships. Complex trauma in children is often referred to as “developmental trauma.”e use disorder.

Those who work as first responders are more likely to experience traumas, single or multiple based on their line of work. It is important for employers to be mindful of traumatic incidences their employee’s experience as counselling and therapy may be necessary. Common signs of trauma are:
- Avoidance of activities or places that trigger memories related to the event
- Withdrawal from others
- Easily startled
- Present as depressed or anxious
