Concurrent Trauma and Addiction Program

Designed for military service members, veterans, or first responders looking for treatment for trauma, PTSD, and/or operational stress injury. During treatment at Gateway Recovery Centre in Peterborough, Ontario, clients will receive support from medical experts and fellow clients who understand the challenges you’re experiencing.

Our medical team provides the judgment-free care and guidance needed to face traumas and moral injuries and to overcome any concurrent concerns, including addiction. Our small groups are the perfect size to provide community support while allowing for individual help.

Our Approach to PTSD & OSI Treatment

Our PTSD treatment centre near Toronto uses an integrative model of care that addresses concurrent substance use and incorporates various therapeutic techniques, including:

  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for overcoming workplace trauma
  • In-vivo exposure which allows clients to confront and regulate emotional response to workplace triggers in real time
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to assist in developing helpful thought patterns and healthy behaviours in recovery
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) for developing the skills needed to manage emotions and relationships, practice mindfulness, and survive crises
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to help clients to process their beliefs about a traumatic event they have experienced
  • Individual psychotherapy for an empathetic and safe space to discuss personal recovery concerns and develop treatment goals
  • Group therapy to provide opportunities for peer support and professionally guided emotional processing
  • Psychoeducational sessions to help you understand yourself, trauma and the nature of addiction
  • Relapse prevention groups for identifying substance use patterns and relapse warning signs, and to develop a long-term recovery plan
  • Recreation therapy for establishing a healthy leisure lifestyle that supports recovery

A Day at Gateway

Our medical experts carefully design every aspect of the Gateway Recovery Centre experience to provide clients with the best chance at recovery.

Throughout the day, Gateway offers many recreational activities, both on- and off-site, that clients can participate in between therapy sessions. While these activities vary based on availability, season, weather, and more, some fun examples of what clients can enjoy during their time at Gateway include:

Journaling, morning walks, trivia night, golf, yoga, shopping, spirituality, wood carving, baking, music fest, meditation, birding, escape maze, guitar lessons, lavender farm visits, disc golf, movie nights, Blue Jays baseball game outings, horseshoes, bowling, and our personal favourite, staff versus clients kickball games!

Morning

Start the day with a healthy, freshly-prepared breakfast. Then you’ll set your intentions with self-reflection, before attending an educational lecture about distress tolerance. Afterwards, you’ll get moving with a workout in our fitness centre, relax with a hot yoga class, or even attend a boot camp session.

Afternoon

After a delicious lunch, learn how the mind-body connection affects trauma recovery. Then, attend a one-on-one therapy session to learn how to cope with triggers.

Evening

In the evening, participate in a specialized, trauma-centred peer support group focused on symptoms management, emotional processing, or returning to work. After meditating, enjoy dinner with fellow clients and an evening walk.
