Outdoor Adventure Program

CHRC outdoor adventure programming provides our clients with an alternative classroom for learning and growth.  The opportunity to be outside in nature facing the challenges of weather, terrain and travel offers an accelerated environment for improving an individual’s physical, social, spiritual, and psychological well-being.

CHRC collaborates with The Land Canadian Adventures to facilitate monthly day trips that clients can participate in for an additional fee.  Clients can enjoy canoeing in the warmer months and snowshoe treks in the colder months.  All our adventures take place in or near the rugged Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park known as the “land between” referring to the unique location straddling the lowlands of Southern Ontario and the southern edge of the Algonquin Highlands.

Spirituality

Spirituality is a difficult subject to explore, but not because it isn’t simple, but because we are complicated beings. Our unique approach disarms the often-oppositional understanding of faith and instead focuses on the connection at the heart.

The spirituality component is a natural fit in Canadian Health Recovery Centre’s holistic vision of treating the body, mind and spirit and highlighting the beautiful ways these all overlap. At the CHRC we are not interested in converting individuals to a specific religion, but instead, we are interested in inspiring them to consider or reconsider spirituality as an incredible tool in their toolbox towards sobriety and a better life.

Yoga and Meditation

Yoga is a positive way of providing an escape or empowerment to those seeking to achieve relaxation.  Yoga often compliments other relaxation methods taught to our clients. Yoga is also a great way to increase your strength and flexibility in a calm, relaxed atmosphere.

Yoga instructors will usually encourage you to go at your own pace and only push yourself as far as you are comfortable with. Our Yoga and Meditation teacher will help clients to re-connect with the breath and the mind to aid with relaxation, ease anxiety or panic, and a release or increase in energy. Yoga and meditation are unique in their ability to allow disconnection or connection with the body and mind to achieve relaxation.

Massage

A massage therapist comes to the Centre once per week for scheduled appointments for a fee. The main benefits of massage are the reduction of stress, pain, and muscle tension.

Massage helps a person physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Physically, it helps with circulation during the detoxification process and rids the person’s muscles of toxins. Emotionally, massage can aid a person’s awareness of their body and can lead to healthfully addressing emotions associated with cravings and stress. Spiritually, massage can provide a still inner place. It can help a person ground, center, and become fully present – a mindfulness technique if you will.

Near-infrared sauna

The near-infrared sauna promotes relaxation and stress relief through its impact on your parasympathetic nervous system. Regular use produces genuine relaxation of body and mind improving a sense of well-being.  The saunas use has benefits after a work-out, before bed, and to relax. Like other saunas, it aids in detoxification of your system, releasing toxins through your pores. 

Fitness coaching

CHRC offers clients the ability to meet and prepare a plan for their fitness journey while in treatment and after.  Clients will be supported in setting obtainable goals, using equipment, and follow up with the trainer when needed for assessment of form and function. Clients who wish to continue with our personal trainers beyond the three included sessions are able to do so for a fee paid directly to our personal trainers. 

Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular acupuncture (acu-detox) is a specialized form of acupuncture and is performed by placing five thin, sterile, single-use needles in your ear. The needles are generally left in place for 30 – 40 minutes. Auricular Acupuncture has proven to be effective in providing both physical and emotional relief, managing withdrawal symptoms, reducing depression and anxiety symptoms, helping to ease sleep disturbances and reducing cravings to use substances. Many clients report feeling a general sense of well being after the treatment.

Epsom salt baths

Epsom salts are used to support a client in relaxation and can support with sleep for those who may struggle to fall asleep at night.  Epsom salt baths can also support in relief of muscle aches and pains as they relate to withdrawal from substances, or from working out in the gym.   Clients are welcome to utilize the Epsom salt baths at any time.  Clients find it beneficial to utilize the near-infrared sauna then have an Epsom salt bath to support relaxation before bed each night.

Social recreation

Clients are welcome to participate in social activities with their co-clients each month.  We look to support our clients in patterning behaviours related to holidays and celebrations that are healthy and social.  We offer a themed social opportunity each month including; Applefest, Rib-fest, and a Super Bowl party.  In addition to these monthly celebrations we offer weekend tournaments and games organized by counsellors for some friendly competition and fun.
